Making such stops as Aphrodite’s Birthplace, the Temple of Apollo and the Salt Lakes the route provides breath taking scenery with the sea whispers encouraging the athletes to carry the message to Save the Planet.

Paphos Harbour, Paphos

Legends of love, magnificent mosaics, archaeological awes and captivating coasts make the small town of Pafos (Paphos) enlightening to explore, and beautiful to behold.

Pafos was originally the island’s capital some centuries ago, but can now instead call itself the capital of culture, thanks to its significant historical sites and monuments - many of which are linked to the Ancient Greek Goddess of Love and Beauty - Aphrodite. It is no wonder then that due to its sheer wealth of ancient remnants, Katos Pafos as a whole has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Pafos is comprised of its old and new towns, with its harbour and Medieval Castle forming the focal point. The region also has quaint resorts further afield, including that of Polis Chrysochou and its fishing port of Latchi, and is home to areas of stunning natural splendour, including the Akamas Peninsula and its Avakas Gorge, Lara beach (where Green Turtles nest), and Petra tou Romiou (Aphrodite’s Rock/birthplace).

Although small in size, Pafos is big on the experiences it offers; a fascinating tapestry of modern tourist accommodation, shopping options and entertainment, woven with aspects that are immersed in antiquity and myth… which is why it was Aphrodite’s sanctuary then, and that of visitors the world over now.

Kolossi Castle

Kolossi Castle is a former Crusader stronghold on the south-west edge of Kolossi village 14 kilometres (9 mi) west of the city of Limassol on the island of Cyprus. It held great strategic importance in the Middle Ages, and contained large facilities for the production of sugar from the local sugarcane, one of Cyprus's main exports in the period. The original castle was possibly built in 1210 by the Frankish military, when the land of Kolossi was given by King Hugh I to the Knights of the Order of St John of Jerusalem (Hospitallers).

The present castle was built in 1454 by the Hospitallers under the Commander of Kolossi, Louis de Magnac, whose coat-of-arms can be seen carved into the castle's walls.

Owing to rivalry among the factions in the Crusader Kingdom of Cyprus, the castle was taken by the Knights Templar in 1306, but returned to the Hospitallers in 1313 following the abolition of the Templars.

CYMEPA Office

The principal aim of CYMEPA is to encourage and actively assist effective efforts to prevent all forms of pollution of the sea. The Association also helps seafarers and executives to be more aware of safety and the protection of the marine environment. CYMEPA also initiates environmental projects and operates extensive public awareness campaigns, giving priority to environmental education of Schoolchildren. CYMEPA supports and assists the Government of Cyprus in ratifying and implementing international conventions addressing the protection of the marine environment.

Larnaka (Larnaca) Salt Lake

Larnaka (Larnaca) Salt Lake is the second largest salt-lake in Cyprus and measures 2,2 square kilometres. In 1997 it was declared a protected area under Cypriot Law for the Protection and Management of Nature and Wildlife and under the European Habitats Directive. It is a significant Ramsar and Natura 2000 site - one of the most significant biotopes in Europe - and one of the most important habitats in Europe for waterfowl.

What is Running Out of Time?

Running Out of Time is an annual climate relay that raises awareness, inspires action and celebrates great climate campaigns, projects and events across Britain.

The 2024 Relay launches 6th June at Ben Nevis before undertaking an extraordinary 2,436km journey through 50 cities and towns to Big Ben in Parliament Square, London on July 4th. Comprising 210 stages - and 80+ visits to climate & nature projects, sporting bodies & venues, schools, events and iconic locations - its set to be the most spectacular Climate Relay yet.

It features famous sporting venues; stunning natural sites, schools, universities, community projects, music, fashion and climate events. And a host of different and imaginative ways to move the baton which will be run, walked, cycled, swum, surfed, paddled, skied, para-glided and wake boarded along the way!

When is it?

The relay starts at Lochaber High School, Fort William, on Thursday 6th June and will finish at Big Ben on Thursday 4th July.

Why are you doing this?

We want the Relay to champion climate action and nature, to celebrate the fantastic work that’s already being done, to raise awareness, change minds and inspire action, and to gently but firmly keep the pressure on our governments, our employers, our places of learning and ourselves to take collective action.

We want it to be an event that links and unites, that demonstrates the support that exists for change, and that provides our partners with a platform to help achieve their goals and objectives.

We do this because we believe in a future that not only avoids the most disastrous impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss - indescribably important though that is - but that also takes us to a better place. One with sustainable, affordable energy, with clean air and clean water, with food for all, and a natural world that can be enjoyed by future generations.

We know we are only a tiny part of a global community that shares this vision but relays are what we do and we are determined to play our part.

Who can take part?

You must be over the age of 18 to sign-up to our relay and be able maintain an average pace of 7 minutes per kilometre for the duration of a stage.
